3 Things nobody told me before I became a mom

Being a mom is simultaneously one of the scariest and most wonderful learning experiences a woman goes through. It is scary because no baby is born with an instructional manual.

My first year (and the 30 odd subsequent years) as a mom has been filled with days when I wished I knew the right thing to say or the best thing to do. My life has been full of uncertainty and hope at the same time. It has also been filled with the most wonderful moments of sheer joy, awe and honesty - if you want to hear the truth, ask children!

1. Nobody told me that being a mom is like being a filling station
Moms are there to fill up and top-up empty hearts with fuel that encourages her family to dream more and stay focused on their goals.

2. Nobody told me she is more like a harbour
A mom is a place of safety, a harbour that shelters you against life’s storms. It is the sameness and softness of a mom that cushions the falls and softens the blows life deals. It is the familiar smells of her cooking and perfume that says ‘Kick off your shoes, let down your hair, drop the mask and be yourself’.

3. Nobody told me that a mom is always a cheerleader to her family
Moms often encourage their children to be the best they can be without needing applause when the children to live up to their potential. They remind them to stay focused even when life is particularly challenging.
