Child safety in shopping malls

Child safety in shopping malls is a huge concern for parents. Koos Herselman, Stress and Trauma Consultant and Personal Safety Trainer and Security Consultant, provided the following tips that can dramatically reduce the risk of your child being snatched:

  • Always be more than one adult when shopping with children. One adult’s responsibility must be to guard the children.
  • Dress your children in colourful, clearly identifiable clothing.
  • Consider using a harness for toddlers, or a proximity alarm. Visit www.4akid.co.za for child safety products.
  • Teach your children that they must never move more than two meters away from you, and must always remain in sight.
  • Don’t ever leave your children alone in public playing areas.
  • Children under nine must always be accompanied to public toilets.
  • Teach them that, if they are separated from you, they should immediately stop and wait for you. Tell them that you will retrace your steps and find them. If they are feeling unsafe they should go to the nearest woman with children or shop cashier, and let them know that they have become separated from you. They must still insist in staying where you can find them.
  • Teach your young children that they have a built-in siren (their scream) and that they should use it if an unknown adult tries to take them somewhere, or tries to touch them inappropriately.
  • Make sure that your children know your cell phone number.
