Clever parents, clever six year olds

Children between the ages of 6 and 8 years have a lot of identity development that is taking place. They think about who they are, where they are from and what they look like. Parents can be involved in this process in the following ways:

  1. Children often prefer one-on-one interaction and parents can use this to create valuable learning experiences.
  2. Learning activities should be physical as well as cognitive.
  3. Children learn through play, make it fun by for example counting the pieces of lego they need for the house they are building.
  4. They are now emotionally ready to play games with rules that also include winning or losing.
  5. Children are now aware of the past, present and future – have conversations about what happened yesterday, what you are planning for today or what they are looking forward to in the future. Read more about how you can teach kids about time.
  6. They are still self-centred at this age, which is normal. Encourage them to think about how someone else might feel about something.
  7. Reading to your child out loud and letting them read to you, will, enrich their vocabulary.
  8. Create a love for Maths by looking for toys that helps with left and right brain development and that focus on addition, subtraction and decimals.
  9. Boost their self-confidence by praising them when they remember small details.
