The example of whole wheat
The consumption of whole wheat bread has been on a dramatic increase worldwide. International nutrition guidelines advise to replace refined grains with whole grains. Children who consume whole grains have significantly higher intakes of fibre and magnesium compared to children who do not consume whole grains to name but one of the advantages. Better nutrition usually leads to better development and better scholastic performance.
But how do we get children to make the healthy choice of whole grains?
Some of the reasons why parents and kids don’t choose whole grains are the less preferred taste, higher price (in some situations) and lack of availability.
Research has also proven that it doesn’t always appeal to them. Colouring and shape are considered important factors to consider when preparing whole wheat bread to attract children.
Research says you mostly eat with your eyes!
Nudging, a component of behavioural economics has proven to be effective in increasing healthy behaviour choice. Nudges to increase children’s intake of whole wheat bread could be inspired by current food marketing strategies aimed at children.
Marketing studies have shown that children usually respond positively to foods and beverages that are specifically targeted at them, so-called ‘fun food’. Fun foods are developed to appeal to children because of their shape, package, cartoon images, merchandise tie-ins, or colours and language referring to fun. The visual appearance and shape of food is a very important factor in eating behaviour.
When preparing a healthy meal for your children or baking bread with good nutritional value, consider the shape, colour and size. Make sure you make “fun food”.
