Fireworks




  • Never let children play with or light fireworks. According to South African law, no children under the age of 16 is allowed to handle fireworks.
  • If you give kids sparklers, remember that they are also dangerous and can reach a temperature of 982 oC. They should be handling them outside under adult supervision and keep them away from their faces, clothing or hair.
  • Place fireworks on a flat surface and stabilise them with rocks to prevent them from tipping over and firing in an unexpected direction. 
  • Follow the instructions included carefully. 
  • If fireworks didn’t fully ignite or go of, never try to re-light. Dispose of them.  
  • Keep a bucket of water, garden hose or fire extinguisher close by in case of a fire or accident. 
  • Never point or throw fireworks at someone. 
  • There are laws about where you are allowed to set off fireworks. Make sure you get the necessary permits in the case of an event.  
  • Light fireworks one at a time and move away quickly. 
  • Do not use alcohol when you plan to work with fireworks. 
  • Never try to make your own fireworks.
  • Don’t allow kids to pick up the pieces afterwards, they might still be hot or could still explode. 
  • Soak all used fireworks in water before you throw them away. This way you will be sure that they are completely dead.
