The do’s & don’ts of a dummy

A dummy can be a big help, especially if you need to soothe your baby or get them to fall asleep, but getting rid of the dummy has proved very difficult.  These are some of the advantages, disadvantages and tips around the use of a dummy:

Advantages:

  • A dummy can help keep the stomach contents down when a baby has reflux.
  • A dummy can help prevent SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) in small babies.
  • Soothes and helps baby to sleep.

Disadvantages:

  • If a dummy is used for too long your child gets emotionally attached to the dummy.
  • It can lead to orthodontic problems if sucked after the age of 2 years old.

Tips:

  • Limit dummy use, for example, you can only get your dummy when it’s nap time.
  • Don’t pin the dummy onto their clothes, it makes it too convenient for them to reach for it and suck it all the time.
  • When your baby moves into a new developmental stage which distracts them from the dummy, can be the ideal time to take the dummy away.
